Festival of British Archaeology 2012

On Saturday 14th July, Abi McCullough and Sophie Watson of CPAT hosted a 'Family Archaeology Day' at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre near Rhayader. The event couldn't have succeeded without the partnership of the Elan Valley Trust and their staff. Various hands-on crafts and activities were offered and due to the generosity of the Elan Valley Trust children were able to try their hands at an excavation experience and recover buried artefacts.

Visitors could also have a go at some pottery reconstruction with a broken pot (kindly lent to us by Ironbridge Archaeology) and do all sorts of medieval themed cutting-out, sticking and colouring.

On 21st July Jeff Spencer led a well-attended guided walk around the ruins of Montgomery Castle, after which several of the group took the opportunity to look at the finds recovered during the castle excavations of 1964-1981 now on display nearby, at the Old Bell Museum.

The Festival of British Archaeology is coordinated by the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) based in York.
