This second season work at the Cwm Mawr axe factory near Hyssington in Montgomeryshire will involve larger-scale excavation of one of the most promising small quarry sites identified in the area of the rock outcrop used for the production of battle-axes and axe-hammers in the Bronze Age. The primary objectives will be to look for dating evidence and evidence of quarrying technology. Hindwell Causewayed Enclosure

Hindwell causewayed enclosure

Recent cropmark evidence has revealed a potential causewayed enclosure which adds significantly to the already important complex of Neolithic field monuments within the Walton Basin which include cursus monuments and palisaded enclosures in addition to habitation sites, funerary monuments and lithic scatters. The objective of the project is to place this new discovery within a local and national framework, to identify the vulnerability and state of preservation and to make recommendations for future management. Project work will include geophysical survey to define the remaining sections, followed by small-scale trial excavation to determine the date, condition and vulnerability of the site, which is subject to regular ploughing. A number of flint artefacts have already been recorded in this area and a programme of field-walking is proposed to recover further artefacts and map their general distribution.
