PRN 37424 - Rhiwsaeson Corn Mill

NGR :- SH903046 (SH90SW)
Unitary authority :- Powys
Community :- Llanbrynmair
Prefered site type :- Post Medieval - Corn mill (Building - Damaged )

Corn mill, now a house with some remains of mill iron work and stones. Recorded in 1586 and on OS 1" 1836.

The Afon Rhiwsaeson was also known as Afon y Pandy as there were several pandy mills along its short length. Indeed the corn mill working in 1763 and 1836 may well have evolved from a walkmill here in the possession of the lord of Powis in 1586 (NLW, Powis Castle 16300). The mill race started at Plas Rhiwsaeson on Afon Cwm (Clegyrnant) above the confluence with Nant y Waen Gau (NLW, Wynnstay Cyfeiliog Survey 1763, map vol. 1; OS 1in 1836; OS 6in 1892). It was described in 1763 as being 'built with stone and slate cover, in good repair, has one pair of stones only and often short of water'. Thomas Jones, the tenant, paid an annual rent of £6 at this time. The mill is now a holiday cottage with several millstones and some remains of the cast iron spur wheel scattered around outside.(Barton P.G,1999,54).
