PRN 6241 - Llanbrynmair Parish Find II

NGR :- SH8902 (SH80SE)
Unitary authority :- Powys
Community :- Llanbrynmair
Prefered site type :- Roman ? - Findspot (Finds only - Unknown )
first alternative :- Post Medieval ? - Find

UPPER STONE OF ROTARY QUERN SOME 0.26M ACROSS BY 0.12M THICK AND HAVING A PROJECTING IMPERFECTLY PERFORATED LUGG APPARENTLY TO TAKE A VERTICAL HANDLE. THE UPPER PARTS HAVE BEEN WORKED INTO A UNIFORM BUN-SHAPE BUT THE TOP HAS BEEN FLATTENED EITHER DELIBERATELY OR BY WARE (PERHAPS IN SOME SECONDARY USE). THE LOWER (GRINDING) SURFACE IS A SHALLOW CONCAVE CONE WHICH APPEARS TO SHOW RELATIVELY LITTLE WARE. THE STONE IS VIRTUALLY INDENTICAL TO AN UPPER QUERN STONE AT LLANERCHBROCHWEL IN POWYS (SEE PAR 6240) AND BOTH SONES RESEMBLE CERTAIN ROMANO-BRITISH QUERN TYPES BUT APPEAR TO HAVE NO SECURE PARALLELS OUTSIDE POWYS AND THUS MAY BE A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED LOCAL VARIANT (OR OF A LATER POSS POST MEDIEVAL DATE). THE EXACT FINDSPOT IS UNKOWN BUT IT WAS PROB A CASUAL FIND FROM SOMEWHERE IN LLANBRYNMAIR PARISH FOUND SOMETIME DURING 1984 BUT THIS IS BY NO MEANS CERTAIN AS THE FINDER HAS GIVEN TWO CONFLICTING STORIES ABOUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THIS FIND WHICH MUST CAST DOUBT ON ANY PROVENANCE GIVEN HERE (THE NGR GIVEN HERE IS USED MERELY TO `TIE' THE SITE TO LLANBRYNMAIR PARISH). THE OBJECT REMAINS WITH THE FINDER. N.B. THE NGR GIVEN BY CPAT, 1985 IS CERTAINLY WRONG AND SHOULD READ ... C. SH 8 0
