A weekly market is recorded in 1252 and 1282 (held on Friday, then later, Monday). There had probably been a market at Welshpool since the early 1240s when a borough charter was granted by Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn. Market removed from Welshpool by Edward I in 1279 due to complaints from Montgomery that their market (PRN 85527) suffering because of that at Welshpool. Market restored to Welshpool three years later, in 1282 (Barton, P G, 2002, pp73-83).
