Clwyd Metal Mines Survey


Rhydwen

Rhydwen lies in the community of Whitford in the county of Flintshire. It is located at Ordnance Survey national grid reference SJ13407670. The mine is recorded in the CPAT Historic Environment Record as number 18194 and this number should be quoted in all correspondence.

Lead/Silver (1887-1913)

Geology
Carboniferous Limestone.

Workings
A few tons of ore were raised at Rhydwen by the Lloc Mining company in the 1880s and again in the early this century according to Smith (1921). A single shaft mound lies on the edge of the Crown Wood at SJ12605675, and three shafts lie in close proximity to Offa's Dyke on Rhydwen Farmland at SJ13307670, SJ13357670 and SJ13357660. The shafts are in use in 1899, being on the OS map of that date.
